5 Renovation Mistakes to Avoid

There’s no one way to approach a successful home renovation. No matter what methods you use to tackle your project, you’re bound to run into some snags along the way. However, learning from others’ past mistakes and learning what NOT to do can greatly help you make the most of your time and money. Check out these 5 renovation fails, and learn how you can avoid making the same mistakes!

1. Lacking a clear plan

When approaching a project involving money and time, you’re going to want to map out your plan. This doesn’t mean just a brief idea of what you want; a home remodel is not something to which you can say, “let’s wing it.” It requires you to do your homework, take realistic stock of your renovation needs, and estimate the cost associated with each project. Think through every little tiny detail, and it will not only lessen surprises, but it will keep you from changing your mind too often down the road.

2. Hiring the first contractor, roofer, or electrician you meet

I would suggest you meet with at least 3 different potential hires before deciding. Not being thorough with your research can be detrimental later on down the line. Get quotes, references and a portfolio of their past work, just to be sure. You want to find people who not only understand your vision but who can execute it in an open and honest manner. Every person working on this project with you has to be on the same page; so make sure you’re finding the right fit.

3. Failure to attain permits

Permits help protect your home and your safety. Without the necessary approvals to perform work on your property, there’s a chance the renovation won’t meet local building codes. Proceeding without the right permits could result in fines, delays, and may result in having to redo your project. It could even affect your ability to sell your home in the future! To cover all your bases, contact your municipality for details about what permits you need for your renovation project.

4. Creating an unrealistic budget

In this case, when I say “unrealistic,” I mean a budget that doesn’t allow for much wiggle room. Try budgeting for something between 15 and 20 per cent in overages, but don’t tell anyone! Push your hard number, but know that you have some cushion when things run over.

5. Rushing your project

This is pretty straightforward: In order to get quality results, you have to put in quality work! While you’re in the process of cushioning your budget, go ahead and cushion your time frame too. The unexpected WILL happen, and the unforeseen will occur. Being too strict on a deadline can cause the team to stress, cut corners and perform subpar labour. This is a big investment, so it’s important that it be done right.

Ready to renovate? I hope so! Now that you’re a little more prepared, you should be well on your way to designing your dream home In the market to buy a new home altogether?
